General Research Objectives

Organizational culture: Organizational culture seeks to understand how professionals integrate and work within a healthcare environment. It refers to the values, beliefs, norms and practices shared by members of an organization in a healthcare institution, which can significantly influence leadership style, quality of care provided, job satisfaction and patient safety.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being: Nursing leadership plays a critical role in promoting health and providing accessible, safe, timely, and quality health care for all, aligning with this goal. Nurses lead health care teams, coordinate care, perform health assessments, administer treatments, and educate patients and communities about health promotion and disease prevention.

SDG 4: Quality Education:  Nurses and other health professionals play an important role in health education, both in training health professionals and in providing health education to users. Leadership can be involved in promoting quality education programs that equip health professionals with leadership skills.

SDG 5: Gender Equality: Nursing leadership can promote gender equality by empowering nurses to take on leadership and influence roles within the profession. This contributes to equal employment opportunities, fair wages, and equitable representation at all levels of decision-making.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities:Nurses play essential roles in providing health care to vulnerable communities such as homeless people, rural areas, indigenous peoples, and others. Nursing leadership can advocate for policies and programs that aim to reduce inequalities in access to health and improve health outcomes for marginalized populations, thus aligning with SDG 10.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals: Nursing leadership can collaborate with other stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organizations, research institutions and the private sector, to promote the effective implementation of health-related SDGs, advance science by contributing to practical applicability, identify ways to optimize processes, promote innovation and continuous improvement within health organizations, and is a path that must be followed.

Ongoing Projects

Validity, reliability and cross-cultural adaptation assessment of the Evidence-Based Practice Nursing Leadership Scale and Evidence-Based Practice Work Environment Scale for Brazil

Description: Evidence-Based Practice represents a safe and systematic approach to guiding professional nursing practices. It focuses on identifying and solving problems based on the most solid scientific evidence available, providing a consistent basis for the adopted conduct. There is still a notable shortage of nurses who play roles in training or care and who have a substantial conceptual mastery of the subject. Although the role of individual professionals is essential, Evidence-Based Practice is not an isolated activity.

To effect changes that favor the adoption of Evidence-Based Practice in nursing care and in the training of professionals in this area, it is necessary to establish an organizational environment that encourages this integration. Given that leadership and organizational structures can prove to be obstacles or facilitators in the implementation of Evidence-Based Practice, it is essential to have instruments to assess the degree of support they offer. Based on this gap, there are two scales designed to analyze the organizational environment and nursing leadership as essential components for understanding the factors that promote or hinder Evidence-Based Practice.

Objectives: To validate the Evidence-Based Practice Nursing Leadership Scale and the Evidence-Based Practice Work Environment Scale for Brazil.

Method: A methodological study aimed at the translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validity of the Evidence-Based Practice Nursing Leadership Scale and the Evidence-Based Practice Work Environment Scale.

Monitoring and assessment of the Street Outreach Clinic team (SOCt) actions in the municipality of Suzano - São Paulo: proposal of intra and intersectoral guiding guidelines

Description: The nature of this project is policy in execution (PEX), rapid science of monitoring and assessment of the Street Clinic (SOCt) team actions in the city of Suzano – São Paulo. The Street Outrearch Clinic is a Primary Care strategy for the benefit of life that emerged in Brazil in the 1990s as a response to the homeless population’s health demands. As a strategy of the Brazilian National Primary Care Policy (in Portuguese, PNAB – Política Nacional de Atenção Básica), the Street Outrearch Clinic team (SOCt) seeks to bring health services to this vulnerable population, who often face difficulties in accessing conventional health services.

Among the objectives, we seek to identify whether the current modality is adequate to the characteristics of the population to be assisted, with a view to nursing leadership, in line with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: Nurses play crucial roles in providing health care to vulnerable communities such as people experiencing homelessness. Nursing leadership can advocate for policies and programs that aim to reduce inequalities in access to health and improve health outcomes for marginalized populations, thus aligning with this goal.

Validity, reliability and cross-cultural adaptation assessment for Brazil of the Gameful Experience Scale [GAMEX]

Description: Assessing games for teaching involves the analysis of several aspects, including the effectiveness of the method in relation to educational objectives. There are several measures and strategies that can be used to assess educational games, one of which is the Gameful Experience Scale [GAMEX]. In this regard, this project aims to adapt and validate the Gameful Experience Scale [GAMEX] for Brazil in order to have a measure that identified participants’ playful experience in gamification strategies.

For cultural validity, the Escape Room game will be carried out at the Center for Nursing Laboratories in Teaching, Skills, Simulation and Research (in Portuguese, CELAB – Centro dos Laboratórios de Enfermagem em Ensino, Habilidades, Simulação e Pesquisa) of the Escola de Enfermagem da Universidade de São Paulo (EEUSP). The objectives will be to reflect on the applicability of cognitive skills in everyday work, such as concentration, focus, speed of reasoning, creativity, teamwork, communication, decision-making, emotional intelligence, planning, organization, and conflict management. It is expected that the scale can be adapted and validated for Brazil so that it can serve as an instrument to assess whether the game is aligned with the learning objectives, how engaging the game is for participants, and whether players are learning from this teaching strategy.

Mapping value-based nursing leadership in undergraduate nursing: a multicenter approach

Description: The study focuses on teaching and learning values-based leadership in nursing courses. Leadership in nursing is essential to ensure the quality of patient care and the effectiveness of the nursing team’s work. A nursing leader must respect the professional values of the profession, inspiring and motivating the team to be ethical, transparent and committed to the quality of care provided to patients.

Professional nursing values were explicitly expressed in the Nursing Code of Ethics and are the basis for professional practice, being used to guide nursing training in higher education. Building learning based on professional values allows students to reflect on the importance of strengthening their professional identity and making decisions based on values. Professional values are a compilation of common positions and practices among individuals in a given professional category. Therefore, they function as beacons that guide actions in pursuit of objectives.

Mapping professional values means having a clear and formal statement of the behavior and causes defended by workers in the category. Hence, understanding one’s own professional profile helps us to have a broad view of our characteristics, allowing us to improve our qualities that drive our career. Mapping this during nursing training will make it possible to direct learning towards the desired professional values.

Pedagogy of sport and movement as an instrument to support the development of leadership in nursing undergraduate students

Description: It is believed that the lack of development of student leadership during training compromises their initial performance as professionals, which must be developed after training. Therefore, it is possible for universities to alleviate this issue by adopting different strategies during the teaching-learning process. In this regard, this project aims to use the application of sports pedagogy and movement pedagogy as a support tool that can contribute to training nursing students regarding the development of leadership and interpersonal relationships that reflect the style of a leader.

Sports encourage social interaction, favor emotional aspects and stimulate motor and cognitive skills that are important in the leadership process. The methodology will be action research, where the Escape Room game will be applied. Through puzzles and tangible challenges, participants will develop strategies that will involve collaborative work, engagement, communication, decision-making, conflict management, among other essential characteristics to be a successful leader.

The use of active methodologies with behavioral modeling for the development of value-based leadership in nursing students

Description: It is believed that the lack of development of value-based leadership in students during their training compromises their initial performance as professionals, and that it is necessary to develop this after graduation. Therefore, it is possible for universities to alleviate this issue by adopting different strategies during the teaching-learning process.

In this sense, this project has as its guiding question: What are the active behavioral approach methodologies and how are they used in the disciplines of the undergraduate nursing course by professors at the Universidade de São Paulo with a focus on developing student leadership? As a hypothesis, it is believed that there is a gap in the use of active behavioral methodologies focused on the development of student leadership during nursing training. Therefore, identifying what these teaching strategies are and how they are used for the development of value-based leadership will provide reflections on the relevance of the topic.

Professional values as a support tool for the development of nursing leadership.

Description: Professional values should be the baseline for nurses’ actions and should guide decision-making. Values affect individuals’ behavior, which can be inferred to also influence leadership attitudes. The clearer the values are to individuals, the easier it will be to stay on the chosen path and commit to it.

It is believed that professional values can be used as a support tool for developing leadership in nursing and strengthening professional identity, which is the objective of this project.

Reflections on nurse managers’ personal values and the relationship between leadership styles and mental health

Description: Leadership is a prerequisite for the success of organizations. Any preventive approach is only successful if supported by management. Therefore, guidance and strong, visible leadership are needed, where committed managers can make it clear that employee health is a strategic issue within the company. Protecting employees so that they are healthy is not only a legal and ethical duty, it is an organizational necessity, since productivity is closely related to employee well-being.

Leadership theories describe how personality traits, behavior, and power exercised by leaders influence the physical and mental health of those they lead. Objective: To identify nurses’ personal and organizational values, seeking to understand whether there is a relationship between leadership styles and these workers’ mental health. Expected results: The aim is to diagnose these workers’ mental health as well as to reflect on whether the leadership style adopted versus personal/organizational values are contributing positively or negatively to health. Based on this diagnosis, it will be possible to direct programs for managing organizational culture and climate as well as developing leadership based on values.

Nurse leadership in supporting home caregivers of functionally dependent neurosurgical patients: a scoping review

Description: Neurosurgical pathologies are among the most common diseases and have a high morbidity, resulting in disabilities, which represent the main cause of disability in adults. Among the neurosurgical pathologies, the following stand out: stroke, neoplasms of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Regarding stroke, there are 5.5 million deaths per year worldwide and in Brazil.

Data from the Unified Health System (in Portuguese, SUS – Sistema Único de Saúde) show 90 thousand cases/year representing the main cause of disability in adults. Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries are also a serious public health concern in Brazil, and are among the main causes of morbidity and mortality, with the latter having an incidence increase of approximately 4 times per year.

Therefore, assisting the health system in relation to strategies for developing support and seeking quality of life for home caregivers for neurosurgical patients is essential. This project seeks to develop a scoping review on this subject, seeking to list the forms of organization of support for home caregivers with a view to their quality of life, in addition to emphasizing the leadership of nurses in organizing support for home caregivers in the context of neurosurgical patients.
